If you are like many other Americans who purchase bottled water I would like to share some facts with you. The United States is the #1 comsumer of bottled water in the world (over 50 billion bottles/year). To be conservative lets say the average cost is $1.00 p/liter, and there is 3.79 liters/gallon. What will you say when gasoline hits $3.79 p/gallon. If it was, wouldn't you rather pump it from home for virtually nothing. Lets stay on the gasoline topic for a minute. They say water and gas don't mix, but in this case it does. To transport and produce enough bottled water for the United States alone, annually, it takes enough gasoline to fuel 1 million cars for a year.
I would also like to mention the enviromental aspects of drinking bottle water. Every year America produces 27 million tons of plastic bottle waste, 90% of which end up in a land fill until the end of time. It cracks me up that some producers are advertising a smaller cap, which uses less plastic, and throw a Green Ecology label on it. Thanks guys, had nothing to do with saving money on your plastic consumption.
You know when you go to school the teachers tell you all about Supply and Demand. We all sat in on that lesson right. In this case the supply we can get just about free, but through the magic of advertising they convinced us we should pay for it at 1000x markup. Bottled water is not better, maybe worse, than what we can get for about $0.001/liter right in our homes.
Go out and buy yourself a water filter. There are many types to choose from, all of which are relatively inexpensive. Some you can attach to your sink, some you fill and put in the fridge. I have the one that gets filled (Brita), and it works like a charm.
